The European Central Bank (ECB) has initiated a pilot project aimed at providing researchers with access to confidential statistical data sourced from the financial sector. This effort seeks to enhance independent research, facilitate cross-country economic analysis, and deepen the understanding of financial dynamics within the euro area.
Eligible researchers will have the opportunity to work with anonymised data pertaining to balance sheets and interest rates from various banks across the euro area. This initiative reflects the ECB’s commitment to fostering academic inquiry that could challenge and inform its policymaking process, according to ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel.
The pilot phase will support up to ten research projects and will assess how effectively different data access modes work within an 18-month timeframe. The success of this endeavor may lead to the establishment of a permanent infrastructure for ongoing research access, enhancing the ECB’s collaboration with the academic community and promoting a more rigorous analysis of the financial system.
