U.S. Treasury Imposes Sanctions on North Korean IT Fraudsters

Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against six individuals and two entities involved in orchestrated information technology fraud schemes linked to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). These schemes are designed to defraud U.S. businesses and generate substantial revenue aimed at funding the DPRK’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs, with anticipated earnings of nearly $800 million in 2024.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the North Korean regime exploits American companies through deceptive tactics executed by overseas IT operatives. These operatives employ fraudulent documentation and fictitious identities to gain employment while systematically extorting businesses for significant payments. Such actions not only threaten U.S. firms but also breach international sanctions.

The sanctions come as North Korea’s use of fraudulent and malicious practices continues to escalate. The majority of wages earned by these overseas IT workers are reportedly appropriated by the DPRK government to bolster its military funding, particularly for WMD and ballistic missile advancements. The implications of these fraudulent schemes extend beyond economic harm, posing risks to national security by potentially compromising American companies’ sensitive data.
