Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee Highlights Rising Economic Uncertainty

The US Treasury recently released a report from the Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee (TBAC), revealing significant economic shifts driven by soaring commodity prices, particularly influenced by the Iran conflict. Since early February, oil prices have surged nearly 60%, impacting inflation expectations and leading to a hawkish repricing of central bank policies across Europe and North America.

The report highlights that 10-year bond yields among G10 countries have surged, with many countries now expecting rate hikes due to rising inflation. The US market, however, has showcased resilience, with US Treasury bonds underperforming less than their global counterparts and US equities outperforming by nearly 10% since early March, partly bolstered by a robust technology sector.

Moreover, the TBAC noted an increase in US consumer spending on gasoline, reflecting the impact of rising energy prices. However, robust consumer spending in other sectors, aided by increased tax refunds from fiscal policy changes, appears to balance out this effect. The committee’s insights point to growing economic uncertainty, particularly concerning energy prices and their implications for both domestic and global markets.
