U.S. Treasury Reports January TIC Data Shows $25 Billion Outflow

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has released the Treasury International Capital (TIC) data for January 2026, indicating a net outflow of $25.0 billion. This statistic reflects the balance between foreign investments in U.S. securities and capital moving out of the United States, highlighting key trends in investor sentiment and international capital flows.

Notably, the report detailed a significant separation between private and official flows. Foreign private outflows accounted for $76.1 billion, countered by foreign official inflows of $51.1 billion. This disparity raises questions about the motivations of private investors and the confidence level of foreign official entities in the U.S. market.

Despite the overall net outflow, foreign residents increased their holdings of long-term U.S. securities, with total net purchases reaching $63.5 billion. This includes $42.0 billion from private foreign investors and $21.4 billion from foreign official institutions, suggesting a continued interest in U.S. assets even amid a general outflow pattern.
